Q: What is acupuncture?

A:  Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body of specific points shown to be effective in the treatment of specific health problems.  These points have been chosen by the Chinese over a period of three thousand years.  Recently, electromagnetic research has confirmed their locations.

Q:  Does it hurt?

A:  You may feel some heaviness, tingling around the needle or traveling up and down the energy pathway.  If you experience discomfort it is usually only mild.

Q:  How does acupuncture work:

A:  Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of Qi (energy) and Xue (blood) through pathways that encase the body similar to nerves and blood vessels.  Ancient theory explains acupuncture treatments as, allowing the Qi to flow in areas that are blocked.  Acupuncture is thought  to regulate and restore perfect balance in the body.

Q:  Are there different styles of acupuncture?

A:  Yes, there are many different styles of Acupuncture.  Acupuncture originated in China but also spread to Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Europe and the British Isles and America.  Different styles developed with the many different opinions as to theory and technique.

Q:  How many treatments will I need?

A:  That depends upon the duration, severity, and nature of your complaint.  You may need only a couple of treatments for an acute condition, but serious issues may require many treatments.

Q:  What should I know about the proposed treatments?

A:  Your practitioner will explain the nature of your problem and what treatment he or she is recommending. Your practitioner will explain to you the benefits and risks and what other treatment options are available to you through this practitioner or by referral to another practitioner or physician.

Q:  Is there anything I need to do before receiving an acupuncture treatment?

A:  Wear loose clothing and a minimum of jewelry.  Also the treatment will be more beneficial if you've eaten before you arrive.

Q:  What should I do while I'm receiving treatment?

A:  Relax.  Try to lay still and enjoy some quiet time in your life.

Sometimes after the treatment you may feel sleepy or other times very energized.  If you have any questions of concerns always ask your practitioner.  She/He is there to help you.
